Karen is a landscape artist based in Medford, MA. Raised in Hong Kong, she moved to the United States in 2015. Karen currently works in construction relocation, while sharing her creative lifestyle with communities in Massachusetts. Growing up in Hong Kong, she learned that nature is everyone’s treasure--and can’t be taken for granted. Visiting Maine in 2021 had allowed Karen to recognize her deep appreciation for nature, and led her to start painting. Since then, she has traveled to parts of Asia and Europe to find unique landscapes in order to expand her vision. Karen primarily works with acrylic, watercolor, and pen. I have been on a journey to find myself in the art world. The majority of my inspiration comes from nature around the world and teachings from the universe. My work usually features animals, landscapes, and plants. I aim to cultivate a friendly, calm, and vibrant environment for viewers to take space to reevaluate their relationship with the world and find happiness within themselves. He is best known for his manipulation of color and form, which results in works with visual depth and textural complexity. Wernli's artistic practice revolves around the exploration of the interplay between composition, color, and chance. His works often begin with a predetermined composition and color scheme, but as the painting process unfolds, he relinquishes control, allowing the paint to interact with previous layers in unexpected ways. This approach results in compositions that are rich in visual and textural density, with each layer contributing to the overall narrative of the artwork. Drop in and meet this sweet and furry friend from 3:00 - 3:30.  If you have a little one who is scared of dogs, Birdy is the perfect Therapy Dog to help them.  Birdy will visit with kids around the Children's Section of the library for the first thirty minutes.  (This portion is for children of all ages.) First through Fourth Grade students who would like to practice their reading skills can register to Read to Birdy from 3:30 - 4:30 on a first come, first read basis. Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the AIC. (See below for class details.) Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. Cost: $25 per person (payment is collected on the day of the class - card or cash) How to Register: See this page on the WestonAIC.org website for more information. Types of Tech Certification: 3D Printer Certification 3D printers can create prototypes, replacement parts, toys, jewelry, and much more in a matter of minutes with minimal training to get started. Beginners welcome! No 3D modeling experience required. In this class, after going over the fundamental concepts of 3D printing, participants learn to find and prepare digital files for our Prusa 3D printers and each participant completes a print.  Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Prusa printers during AIC Open Maker Hours. Cricut Maker Certification The Cricut Maker can cut, draw, perforate, score, and even engrave. It cuts through more than 100 types of materials, including all kinds of fabric, textiles, paper, vinyl, craft foam, and wood veneer.  With the Cricut Maker, you can cut out dozens of identical felt hearts or a delicate lacy paper wedding invitation, and customize everything from a coffee mug to a tee shirt, in just a few clicks. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Cricut Maker machines during AIC Open Maker Hours. Laser Cutter Certification Laser Cutters can cut extremely accurate objects out of materials like wood, leather, colored acrylic, and even felt or paper to make everything from simple boxes to highly detailed engravings and complex 3-dimensional puzzles. Popular with artists, architects, manufacturers, robotics engineers, and small business owners, these powerful machines allow you to complete your projects lightning fast and repeat them with ease. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the laser cutter during AIC Open Maker Hours with supervision. Welcome students, artists, makers, and the craft curious! Open Maker Hours are dedicated to anyone who would like to use either of our studio spaces to work independently on personal projects. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. If certified patrons would like to make an appointment with Abby to use the laser please sign up here. Just a friendly reminder that you must provide your own materials and there is no instruction provided unless otherwise stated. The equipment may not be available as it is first come first serve. Laser Cutter Certification Laser Cutters can cut extremely accurate objects out of materials like wood, leather, colored acrylic, and even felt or paper to make everything from simple boxes to highly detailed engravings and complex 3-dimensional puzzles. Popular with artists, architects, manufacturers, robotics engineers, and small business owners, these powerful machines allow you to complete your projects lightning fast and repeat them with ease. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Karen is a landscape artist based in Medford, MA. Raised in Hong Kong, she moved to the United States in 2015. Karen currently works in construction relocation, while sharing her creative lifestyle with communities in Massachusetts. Growing up in Hong Kong, she learned that nature is everyone’s treasure--and can’t be taken for granted. Visiting Maine in 2021 had allowed Karen to recognize her deep appreciation for nature, and led her to start painting. Since then, she has traveled to parts of Asia and Europe to find unique landscapes in order to expand her vision. Karen primarily works with acrylic, watercolor, and pen. I have been on a journey to find myself in the art world. The majority of my inspiration comes from nature around the world and teachings from the universe. My work usually features animals, landscapes, and plants. I aim to cultivate a friendly, calm, and vibrant environment for viewers to take space to reevaluate their relationship with the world and find happiness within themselves. Specializing in acrylics on canvas, Wernli is known for large-scale abstractions characterized by luminous, intense colors, crafted through a multi-layer technique. He is best known for his manipulation of color and form, which results in works with visual depth and textural complexity. Wernli's artistic practice revolves around the exploration of the interplay between composition, color, and chance. His works often begin with a predetermined composition and color scheme, but as the painting process unfolds, he relinquishes control, allowing the paint to interact with previous layers in unexpected ways. This approach results in compositions that are rich in visual and textural density, with each layer contributing to the overall narrative of the artwork. Wernli refers to this process as "planned spontaneity," where the principles of coincidence and chance play a central role in the creation of his pieces. Making his own canvas frames to specific proportions creates a link to his past as an architect. Welcome students, artists, makers, and the craft curious! Open Maker Hours are dedicated to anyone who would like to use either of our studio spaces to work independently on personal projects. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. If certified patrons would like to make an appointment with Abby to use the laser please sign up here. Just a friendly reminder that you must provide your own materials and there is no instruction provided unless otherwise stated. The equipment may not be available as it is first come first serve. Drop in and meet this sweet and furry friend from 3:00 - 3:30.  If you have a little one who is scared of dogs, Birdy is the perfect Therapy Dog to help them.  Birdy will visit with kids around the Children's Section of the library for the first thirty minutes.  (This portion is for children of all ages.)
